Preparing for Surgery
Paperwork to complete for your admission
If you’re scheduled for surgery, Dr. Robertson will discuss the procedure and fill out the consent form with you.
When your surgery has been booked, please fill out the online admission form at St. George Private Hospital below.
Pre-operative tests and preparation
A date for surgery will be provided. Our reception team will contact you with fasting instructions and an arrival time for your surgery a few days prior to your operation.
You may require pre-operative blood tests and some patients may also require a pre-operative chest X-ray and ECG.
You may need to take bowel preparation for certain procedures, Dr. Robertson will advise you if you need to do this and give you instructions on how to take it.
Some medications need to be stopped prior to surgery, especially if they thin your blood. Dr. Robertson and her team will discuss these and explain when to stop certain drugs. It is recommended that you speak to the doctor who prescribed the medication to determine whether it is safe for you to stop the medication prior to surgery. Occasionally, an alternative medication needs to be taken prior to surgery and switched back after surgery.
Surgical Fees
You will be given a quote of an estimated surgical fee with a breakdown of the amount that Medicare and your private health fund will rebate, and your out-of-pocket cost. Anaesthetist fees can be obtained directly from your anaesthetist and our staff will provide you with their contact details. You should contact your health fund about your cover eligibility and your excess fee. Additional pathology costs may be involved.
